Hickory FD hires new Fire Inspector

The Hickory Fire Department announced Thursday they have hired a new Fire Inspector.

On December 3, Rickey Rhoney started his job as Fire Inspector with the Department, HFD said. 

Rhoney is certified as a Level II firefighter and a Fire Service Instructor through the North Carolina Fire & Rescue Commission. He has completed both Awareness and Operations level of Hazardous Materials training and has also worked to be certified as a Fire Officer level I and II. 

In 2004, he became certified as an EMT- B (Emergency Medical Technician). He is certified as a Probationary Level I Fire Inspector through the North Carolina Code Officials Qualification Board and is working to become a Certified Fire Investigator (CFI). 

For the past ten years, Rhoney has served as a member of Triple Community Fire Department, where he served as Assistant Chief.

On December 3, Jason Hill started his job as a Firefighter with the Hickory Fire Department. 

Prior to employment with the Hickory Fire Department, Hill served as a Marine with the Marine Corps and has been a volunteer firefighter with St.

Catawba Co. United Way Car Giveaway

A local man won a new car Thursday at the Catawba County United Way’s Car Giveaway.

There were 1772 “fair share” donors to the United Way’s 2012-2013 campaign, and ten finalists were selected and entered into the drawing for the new car.

On Thursday, those ten finalists met at Paramount Automotive’s Kia Showroom in Hickory. Each one was given a key, and one by one they tried to start a vehicle.

The winner, Terry Jennings, of Century Furniture, has his choice of a VW Jetta, a Kia SX-Forte, or a Hyundai Elantra, donated by Mr. Benny Yount and Paramount Automotive Group.

HFD Firefighter retires after 27 years

HICKORY, NC - After 27 years with the Hickory Fire Department, Rick Davis has retired from the department.

His interest in career fire fighting began when he served as a volunteer at Fairborn Fire Department for 10 years. During his career with the Hickory Fire Department, he has worked with many aspects of the department.  He started as a firefighter and moved up through the ranks including Senior Firefighter, Fire Apparatus Operator, Captain and Battalion Chief. 

In 2009, Davis graduated from Western Carolina University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency and Disaster Management. Additionally, he has an Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology and received his designation in 2010 as an Emergency Management Master Exercise Practitioner (EMMEP) through the Emergency Management Institute.

In 2006, he completed the Executive Fire Officer program through the National Fire Academy.

HICKORY, NC - A woman who has served the citizens of Hickory for three decades is retiring.

Libby Grigg, Administrative Assistant for the Hickory Police Department, is retiring after 32 years of dedicated professional service.

Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to join her in a drop-in reception Friday, November 2, at the Floyd W. Lucas, Jr. Police Headquarters.

The reception is from 4 to 5 p.m., with presentations starting at 4:30 p.m.

Fire Inspector retires after 22 years

A long-time Fire Inspector in Hickory is no longer with the Hickory Fire Department. After 22 years with the department, Dyvonne Duvall has retired.

Her interest in firefighting began when she served as a volunteer firefighter in Florida, and completed over 200 hours of training while attending the Florida State Fire Academy.

Ulysses Long to play under the Sails on the Square

Ulysses Long to play under the Sails on the Square

Ulysses Long will sing and play the piano under the Sails on the Square in downtown Hickory this Saturday.

The concert begins Saturday at 6 p.m. and ends at 8:30 p.m., and includes a special presentation to Long at 7 p.m. from Hickory City Council.

“I am excited about performing at The Sails on the Square.  I love Hickory.  Hickory has been very good to me over the past 25 years. The people are wonderful to play to.” Long said, “It’s the people that keep me in Hickory.”

Citizens are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic dinner to enjoy while Long performs.

There are also many restaurants in the downtown area that where people can get “take out” and come enjoy it under the Sails on the Square.
