Who wants to Go Pro with Steve Smith?

Every year, thousands of young football fans dream of breaking the huddle with hero Steve Smith. Showmars, a proud sponsor of Steve Smith’s Football ProCamp, is making that dream a reality for four Charlotte-area children this summer.

Showmars is giving away four spots to the 2013 Steve Smith Football ProCamp. Football fans can sign up by filling out an entry form at any of Showmars 28 Charlotte-Metro locations.

ProCamp is a youth athletic camp for children in grades 1- 8. Established in 1998, the camp provides thousands of youth the opportunity to attend camp with their sporting heroes. At the camp, attendees learn football fundamentals and meet children their own age with like interests.

This year’s ProCamp event will be held at Ardrey Kell High School on Monday, June 10, and Tuesday, June 11.

Volunteers needed for 2013 Unifour Senior Games

The Unifour Senior Games, an athletic and artistic event for seniors 55 years of age and better in Alexander, Burke, Caldwell and Catawba Counties, is currently seeking volunteers to assist with the 2013 Unifour Senior Games.

The 29th Annual games began on April 19, and run through through May 17, at locations throughout the Greater Hickory Metro.

Over 800 area seniors are participating in this year’s Games. Senior Games events include track and field, tennis, bowling, table tennis, swimming, billiards, and many more.

Volunteers are especially needed on Monday, May 6 at the Highland Recreation Center in Hickory for opening ceremonies, spincasting, softball throw, football throw, and basketball shooting events.

Volunteers are also needed on Monday, May 13, at Lenoir-Rhyne University for track and field events.

Local woman graduates basic military training in Texas

Local woman graduates basic military training in Texas

Air Force Reserve Airman Kiah R. Herrin graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas.

The airman completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate in applied science degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

Herrin is the daughter of Gracie and Horace Herrin of U.S. Highway 321 South, Newton.

She is a 2010 graduate of Newton Conover High School.

Green Thumb Garden Club installs "Plant it Pink" garden to help fight breast cancer

Gardening for awareness is exactly what the Green Thumb Garden Club is doing.

Green Thumb Garden Club in partnership with the City of Hickory is installing a “Plant it Pink” Garden at the S.A.L.T. Block.  The looped pink ribbon design honors breast cancer survivors and offers support to those currently suffering from this disease.

Each year over 220,000 United States women are diagnosed with breast cancer and more than 40,000 die.  One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.

Elks honor Lt. Cline as Officer of the Year

Elks honor Lt. Cline as Officer of the Year

The Newton Elks Lodge honored Newton Police Department Lt. Travis Cline with the 2012 Officer of the Year award, which recognizes outstanding service to the community.

Cline’s peers nominated and selected him as the recipient. His fellow officers noted his dedication and service to the department and the citizens of Newton.

“I have been fortunate enough to work with an entire department of exceptional officers who work very hard every day to serve our community,” Cline said. “To be selected as Officer of the Year truly is an honor coming from such an outstanding group of officers. I appreciate the gesture, and our entire police department deserves the recognition and a very big thank you for all their hard work.”

Cline began working for the City of Newton in April 2006 as a patrolman.  He was promoted to sergeant in Sept. 2009, then to lieutenant in Dec. 2010.

Local man graduates basic combat training at Fort Jackson

Army Pfc. William L. Calloway has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness, and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches, and field training exercises.

Calloway is the son of Christina Perez of Wamouth Road, Browns Mills, N.J., and Dan Calloway of Claremont Road, Newton, N.C.

He is a 2009 graduate of Bandys High School, Catawba, N.C.
