Community Blood Center of the Carolinas launches Pints for Pencils Program

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is supporting regional public schools through its Second Annual 'Pints for Pencils' campaign. For each blood donation in August and September, CBCC will donate $1 for school supplies to the public school systems in the 16 North Carolina and three South Carolina counties they serve.

Martin Grable, president and CEO of CBCC explains why the Pints for Pencils Program is important, "As blood is to patients, so are pencils to students. This is why we are committed to building and strengthening community through various collaborations throughout the region".

HICKORY, NC – Hickory residents benefit from free swim lessons at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.

This summer, the City of Hickory offered city residents the opportunity to have their children learn to swim for free through two summer sessions at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.  Fifty-three Hickory residents registered for the two summer sessions.  Even though the program ended July 28, the city is committed to offering swim programs at the YMCA in the winter and spring, as well as the summer.  The City of Hickory and the YMCA are committed to teaching the community to swim.

Throughout the time the City of Hickory has partnered with the YMCA, April 2011 through July 31, 2012, the YMCA has had 1,656 enrolled in their swim program of which 232 registrations came from the City’s involvement.  Both the City and the YMCA hope to involve more of the community in the programs in the future.

Bassett Brothers Sweep Hickory

Bassett Brothers Sweep Hickory

Both UARA-STARS events at Hickory Motor Speedway for the 2012 season belong to the duo of Ronnie Bassett Jr. and Dillon Bassett under the Bassett Racing banner.

Ronnie Jr., 16, won the season opener in March and younger brother Dillon, 15, raced to claim his first UARA victory in only eight starts this past Saturday.

The Bassett brothers claimed their victories in similar fashion. Both events featured a strong 28 car field and while Ronnie Jr. started on the outside pole in March, Dillon rolled off in the sixth position for Saturday’s race. Six appears to be the magic number for the brothers, as they both chose to ride in that position during their prospective races.

The young drivers paced themselves and chose the right time to dial it up with less than 50 laps to go, picking off competitors one by one and finding themselves up front for the finish.
