HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - The Downtown Hickory Development Association is currently seeking artists interested in participating in next month's Downtown Hickory Art Crawl.  There is no charge for the artists and you will not be required to pay any commissions for work that is sold during the event.

There will be room for up to 30 artists.

CMS honors local police, firefighters, and EMS with First Responders Night

Tuesday night, Charlotte Motor Speedway is honoring local police, firefighter and EMS employees with First Responders Night at the Jack in the Box Summer Shootout Series.

All first responders will gain free admission with their employee IDs, plus there will be a “Guns n’ Hoses” school bus race.

In addition to the usual slate of Legend Car and Bandolero Racing, fans can watch as area first responders compete in the last school bus race of the year.

Gates open at 5 p.m. with racing at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $7 for adults and Free for kids 13 and under.

Participating departments include: Harrisburg Fire Department, the Albemarle Police Department and Fire Department, Cabarrus County Emergency Medical Services, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and the Charlotte Fire Department.

Community Blood Center of the Carolinas launches Pints for Pencils Program

The Community Blood Center of the Carolinas is supporting regional public schools through its Second Annual 'Pints for Pencils' campaign. For each blood donation in August and September, CBCC will donate $1 for school supplies to the public school systems in the 16 North Carolina and three South Carolina counties they serve.

Martin Grable, president and CEO of CBCC explains why the Pints for Pencils Program is important, "As blood is to patients, so are pencils to students. This is why we are committed to building and strengthening community through various collaborations throughout the region".

Music, people, and fun at Union Square Grand Opening

HICKORY, NC – The community is encouraged to come out to celebrate an historic event August 10 and 11 full of music, people and fun.  

The grand opening of the new structure on Union Square in downtown Hickory will begin on Friday, August 10 at 6:00 p.m. when the new name of the structure is announced.  Following the historic announcement and recognition of the “name contest” winner one of the area’s favorite steel drum band’s Pan Jive will perform until 8:30 p.m.

The entertainment continues on Saturday, August 11 after the Downtown Hickory Farmers Market, when the Hickory Music Factory Drum Circle performs between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Hickory Residents Benefit from Free Swim Lessons

HICKORY, NC – Hickory residents benefit from free swim lessons at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.

This summer, the City of Hickory offered city residents the opportunity to have their children learn to swim for free through two summer sessions at the Hickory Foundation YMCA.  Fifty-three Hickory residents registered for the two summer sessions.  Even though the program ended July 28, the city is committed to offering swim programs at the YMCA in the winter and spring, as well as the summer.  The City of Hickory and the YMCA are committed to teaching the community to swim. 

Throughout the time the City of Hickory has partnered with the YMCA, April 2011 through July 31, 2012, the YMCA has had 1,656 enrolled in their swim program of which 232 registrations came from the City’s involvement.  Both the City and the YMCA hope to involve more of the community in the programs in the future.

HICKORY - Lenoir-Rhyne University is pleased to announce the 24th season of the Visiting Writers Series. For almost three decades the Series has brought world-renowned authors to the Hickory, NC campus to discuss and read from their own works in a relaxed environment before university and community audiences.

The 2012-13 season kicks off on September 6th at 7:00pm with international best-seller Nicholas Sparks. The event, which is cosponsored by Hickory Public Library, is free and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Firehouse Subs awards middle school more than $1,200 in life-saving tools

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation is awarding much needed equipment to Table Rock Middle School during a ceremony at 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 1, 2012 at the Lenoir Firehouse Subs restaurant.

Otherwise unavailable due to budget constraints, the school benefits with a Cardiac Science Automated External Defibrillator (AED) worth more than $1,200. The donated device will ensure the school is prepared to provide life-saving assistance if a student, staff member or visitor goes into cardiac arrest. Since 2005, Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation has donated more than $381,100 to public safety entities in North Carolina.

"An automated external defibrillator can be the difference between life and death in sudden cardiac arrest victims," said Brian Hammond, franchisee of the Hickory Firehouse Subs location.
