Man robs CVS of medication, police say

HICKORY, NC (WBTV)- Police in Hickory are looking for a man they walked walked into a local drug store and robbed them of medication.

The robbery was reported at the CVS Pharmacy on Springs Road around 8:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Hickory Police Department. 

A man walked into the store, showed employees a gun on his waist and handed them a note demanding drugs. 

He took the drugs and left the store.

Police say a substantial amount of drugs were taken.

Mexican drug trafficker receives life in prison

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- Drug trafficker Alejandro Salinas Garcia, 31, of Mexico, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by Federal District Court Judge Richard L. Voorhees, in Statesville, for his part in a multiple-year conspiracy to distribute cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, and marijuana.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of North Carolina.= made the announcement Monday afternoon.

Four other defendants have previously been sentenced in this indictment, a part of Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force  Operation "Tool Vault," so named because law enforcement seized more than 100 firearms from a tool box maintained by some defendants.

New NC laws, kids cyberbullying teachers outlawed

A raft of new laws addressing crime and punishment take effect on Saturday, including a move widening a three-year-old North Carolina statute criminalizing cyberbullying to protect school employees.

The American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina said the law may be the first of its kind in the country, and the organization said it will seek plaintiffs for a possible court challenge to change it, contending it threatens to chill students' free speech rights.

The law threatens criminal penalties on students who use a computer with "the intent to intimidate or torment a school employee" by engaging in the same nasty online behavior that already makes it illegal to target a minor.

Hundreds cited for DWI during statewide campaign

Transportation Secretary Gene Conti announced Wednesday that state and local law enforcement officers cited 729 motorists for driving while impaired during the “Booze It & Lose It” Halloween campaign, which ran Oct. 26-31.

A total of 24,363 traffic and criminal citations were issued statewide.

“Scary costumes were not the only thing out over the Halloween holiday as impaired drivers also made an appearance,” Conti said.  “Thanks to law enforcement officers from across the state enforcing our laws during this campaign, countless lives were saved.”

Catawba Co. man sentenced to prison for making child porn

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV)- A Catawba County man was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Charlotte to 420 months in federal prison and a lifetime of supervised release for producing child pornography.

In May 2011, a federal grand jury indicted Bruce Leroy Donald, Jr., 41, of Newton, on one count of production of child pornography, one count of a felony offense involving a minor committed by a registered sex offender and one count of possession of child pornography, according to the release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to the criminal indictment, from 2007 to 2008 the defendant did employ, use, persuade, induce, entice, and coerce a minor to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct and knowingly possessed computer hard drives containing such visual depictions.

Man fired on deputies during 3-county chase, officials say

A Lincoln County Sheriff's deputy escaped serious injury Thursday night when a suspect in a high speed vehicle chase fired a shotgun at his patrol car during the pursuit.

The chase started in Stanley in Gaston County when police there tried to stop a white van that sped away, according to the news release from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. 

The officer chased the vehicle on NC Hwy 27 East into Lincoln County where Sheriff's deputies and Lincolnton Police were set up along the way.  Near Sunny Hill Drive the suspect vehicle crashed into the back of a pickup truck pushing in down an embankment where it landed on its side.

No one was injured.

Duo arrested for Lancaster burglaries in Fort Mill

Two men arrested in Fort Mill have been charged in several burglaries that happened in Lancaster, according to the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office.

Joseph Scott Hinson, 20, of Valley Road in Indian Land, and Jonathan Levi Beam, 18 Tirzah Church Road in Sherills Ford, NC, each with three counts of breaking and entering into an automobile.

The duo was arrested in Fort Mill on October 15, after the Fort Mill Police Department got a report of a suspicious vehicle in a neighborhood near Doby’s Bridge Road, deputies say.

Fort Mill PD found the suspicious vehicle and arrested both men following a chase.
