Kids invited to free theatre performance

The Catawba County Public Library is presenting a free theatre performance for kids this weekend.

The area theatrical group Connie Company is set to perform a series of stories for children ages 3 through 10.

The tales, aimed at teaching the importance of positive character traits, include "Polly Peddler and the Story Stealer", "Mean Jean the Recess Queen", "Giraffes Can't Dance", "Koa's Seed" and "Shhh!".

Young theater-goers can catch the show in the library garden of the Sherrills Ford branch of the Catawba County Library, located at 8456 Sherrills Ford Road in Sherrills Ford, Saturday May 18, at 10:30 a.m.

The cost is free, and the program is open to the public.

Science Expo coming to Catawba Science Center

Catawba Science Center (CSC) presents Science Expo on April 6, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m, at CSC.

Science Expo activities will be held in CSC's Inventor's Workshop, North Lobby and the aquarium lobby. Be prepared to discover secrets of invisibility, make your own UV bracelet (while supplies last), investigate polymer “worms” and hydrogels, learn the scat rap, play with magic sand, much, much more!

A Blue Ridge Festival: Traditional Mountain Music and Storytelling

The Hickory Museum of Art is presenting an afternoon of traditional mountain music and storytelling.

The Blue Ridge Festival features offerings from three performers:

1:30 p.m. - Hickory's very own Lisa Neal is set to charm children and parents with traditional tales from the North Carolina mountains.

2:00 p.m. - Visitors can enjoy the storytelling of Diane Hackworth as she spins yarns for audiences of every age and generation.

3:00 p.m. - All ages can appreciate the stylings of Jeff Robbins who is also offering a one-string guitar workshop, following his performance. Registration for the workshop is required, by calling 828-327-8576.

Festival-goers can catch the fun at the Hickory Museum of Art, located at 243 Third Avenue NE in Hickory, Sunday February 24.

Suah African Dance Theatre coming to Hickory

Suah African Dance Theatre coming to Hickory

You are invited to the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library to learn more about the West African culture through diverse music and dancing.

The event takes place on Saturday, February 16 from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Patrick Beaver Memorial Library located at 375 Third Street N.E. on the SALT Block.

The Suah African Dance Theatre's mission is to support and mentor future generations by inspiring in them an appreciation for African culture through diverse styles of dance performances. Suah is a name from the dialect of Gio from Liberia, West Africa that means “A new era, a new beginning.” 

This event is free and open to people of all ages. No registration is required.

Library offers free Spanish classes for kids

The Catawba County Library is teaching free Spanish classes for kids.

Children in grades K-3 are invited to participate under the instruction of Victoria Jones.

Interested parents can bring their kids to the Sherrills Ford Branch of the Catawba County Library, located at 8456 Sherrills Ford Road in Sherrills Ford, any Saturday through March 16.

Beginner classes start at 10 a.m. and run until 10:30 a.m. Intermediate students meet from 10:45 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

A festival for combined classes on March 16 offers food and games for participants.

The classes are free, and pre-registration is required.

Library presents an evening with Deborah Holt Noel

The Catawba County Public Library is presenting an evening with Deborah Holt Noel this week.

Famed for her role as host of North Carolina Weekend, the UNC-TV personality is set to regale the audience with reflections of her broadcasting career.

This discussion launches Black History Month at the Library.

Those interested in attending should be at the Main Branch of the Catawba County Public Library, located at 115 West C Street in Newton, Tuesday February 5, at 6:30 p.m.

Admission is free and open to county residents ages 13 and up.

Museum holds opening reception for Blue Ridge Realists exhibit

The Hickory Museum of Art is holding an opening reception for its newest exhibit this week.

Featuring a selection of paintings by the Blue Ridge Realists, this exhibit celebrates an artistic movement developed in western North Carolina in the 1970s.

The movement was based on rural realism, inspired by a man and his connection to the regional landscape.

The ten artists in this group are Bob Timberlake, Ward Nichols, Cotton Ketchie, Jack Greenfield, Phillip Philbeck, John Furches, Gary Freeman, Richard Oversmith, Scott Boyle and Frederick Craig Franz.

Art lovers can view the display at the Hickory Museum of Art, located at 243 Third Avenue NE in Hickory, Friday January 25, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

Admission is free and open to the public.
