HICKORY - The Hickory Fire Department in conjunction with the Christmas Bureau is asking for new and "like new" bikes and tricycles for needy children to be given out at Christmas time.

Hickory Fire Captains Wayne LaRose and Gary Stevenson, who spearheaded this bike drive, were pleased with the response from last year's "Bikes for Tykes" project.

LaRose states, "We had a lot of very nice bikes donated, which several were fixed up and given to local children and due to some very generous people, 229 brand new bikes and 500 helmets were donated by Catawba County Safe Kids."
