90-year-old daycare worker enjoys working too much to retire

HICKORY, NC (WBTV)- When the Brown Chevy Nova comes barreling down Highway 127 in Hickory, it just can't seem to pass Tender Care Child Development without turning in.

90-year-old Mary Berryhill is behind the wheel reporting for duty Tuesdays, Thursdays, and some Wednesdays for 23 years.

"I guess it's just habit," "Miss Mary" says when asked why she keeps coming to work. She's a little humble in her answer, because it's pretty obvious, she loves the kids and they love her.

Mary comes in before 10 a.m. to prepare lunches for the kids. She stacks dozens of plates on a cart and hustles to each room.

She could have quit years ago, but can't seem to bring herself to keep herself at home.

Mary turns 91 on May 22nd. She's said she's considered retiring then, but she also said that twice since she turned 90.

Train hits tractor trailer, driver escapes unharmed

LONG VIEW, NC (WBTV)- LONG VIEW, NC (WBTV)- A driver and another man inside a tractor trailer rig escaped from their vehicle just moments before a train slammed into their trailer at NW 33rd Street in the Catawba County town of Long View. "It was a very close call" said firefighters who arrived on the scene after the collision.

Police officers Ken Liedke and Raymnd Denton went to the scene after the trucker called Long View Police for help because their rig was stuck  n the middle of the railroad crossing.

"Our communicators called Norfolk Southern and asked them to stop any trains but they said it was too late," said Denton. A freight train was just a mile from the intersection and though it slowed down and engineers tried to stop it, it still slammed into the tractor trailer, splitting it in two.

Just minutes before it hit Liedke and Denton made sure the tucker and his partner were out of the truck.

Family reunited with missing pet turtle after 19 months

TROUTMAN, NC (WBTV)- The Cody family of Troutman might not have expected they'd fall so in love with the turtle they got from the pet store in Colorado.

Within weeks of adopting "Katrina", she was sleeping in bed with the kids. Katrina nuzzled her way into everyone's hearts and into just about every nook and corner of the Cody's backyard.

They named the family's go-kart racing team after her likeness and made her their mascot.

Fear the Turtle Racing turned into a championship team with the Cody's three kids behind the wheel, and Katrina's likeness on all their equipment.

In 2010, when the family made the move to Hickory, Katrina of course, came with them. Then one day, while the Cody's kids were playing in the yard with Katrina, the worst happened.

"Coleton was playing with her watching her real close and he got distracted by something, and he turned around and she was gone," said dad Eric.

Hickory mom named "Most Inspirational" by Boys & Girls Club

HICKORY, NC (WBTV)- Wake up early. Make sure the kids are prepared and on time for school. Get dinner ready, help with homework, spend quality time with the kids before bedtime, and try to find a few minutes for herself.

Being a great mom is a non-stop effort, often with few accolades. But that's about to change for Hickory resident Lorrie Wolfe, who's proven to not only be a great mom, but an exceptional one.

For her efforts, Wolfe has been named by Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Kimberly-Clark Corporation the 2012 Most Inspirational Mom.

The search, which highlights everyday moms doing extraordinary things, sought finalists and named Ms. Wolfe their winner based on her contributions to their children, families and communities.
